The 13th Karmapa wrote in the ‘Collected Works’ that he experienced himself as a child, dressed in white silk [and] holding a crystal plate filled with flowers, (who) [was] in a sphere of rainbow light, and asked, „Who are you?“ The answer was, „I am [Mahakala] Bernagchen, the lion [of] awesome splendor. From the sphere of wisdom, I show a wrathful body. I mastered the four [Buddha] activities. Ultimately, it is the most supreme of views that appearances other than your own mind do not exist separately,“ tossed flowers, and was seen bringing forth a strong “ha ha(-laughter).“
“If one has obtained a precious human body with the 18 conditions now, one would be very stupid not to practice the Dharma!”
The tensions between the Dalai Lama and his administration had reached a new peak. Nevertheless, through his extraordinary skills, Düdül Dorje was able to begin the process of healing the relationship. He did so not through political negotiation, but through the pure exercise of his spiritual powers.
One year, it began with water pouring out underneath a big Buddha statue in the Jokhang-temple (it was feared that the statue could sink into the ground and disappear in the land of the Naga kings). Shortly afterwards, when the Kyichu River breached its banks, threatening to flood Lhasa, it was recalled that Guru Rinpoche had made a relevant prophecy many centuries earlier, suggesting that if one day Lhasa was in danger of flooding, the Karmapa’s help should be sought. Karmapa did indeed help the flooded Lhasa. When the 8th Dalai Lama Jampal Gyamtso and the city officials requested Düdül Dorje’s assistance, he composed a special letter to be placed on the floodwaters, and from Tsurphu invoked the compassion of Loving Eyes. The waters receded, and, with them, some of the animosity that had complicated the Karma Kagyü relationship with the Lhasa-based government.
He later visited Lhasa, and it is said that when he was offering a white scarf to the central Jowo image, its arms moved and have remained in the new position ever since. Düdül Dorje was also received by the 8th Dalai Lama, in gratitude for his timely intervention during the threat of flooding.
The 14th Shamar Rinpoche told a story out of Düdül Dorje’s autobiography:
“The 13th Karmapa wanted to do Phowa for a man, but it was very difficult for the practice to have the proper effect. Then he understood that the man had had tobacco – Tibetans are always sniffing snuff – and that got into the man’s nervous system. Tobacco is not good for the health […]. It does block the nervous system, so it is not so good. The 13th Karmapa Düdül Dorje couldn’t do Phowa very well for that man as he had had too much tobacco and it was blocking the circulation in the subtle nadis (= channels of the subtle energy body within the physical body; a living being’s subtle body is where the immaterial mind and the material body interact). Because the circulation was broken, the practice couldn’t go through properly."
