Chola Empire (848-1279)
0848 - 2026The Chola Empire reached its zenith 985-1044 under Rajaraja Chola I (reigned 985–1014 CE) and his son Rajendra Chola I (reigned 1014–1044 CE). Founded by Vijayalaya in 848, the Chola empire (9th - 13th century) adopted a maritime policy. Temples became cultural and social centers and Dravadian languages flourished.
992 – 1120 the Chola–Chalukya wars took place between the Chola and the Chalukya kingdoms in what is now mainly Southern India. These recurring conflicts eventually exhausted both empires leaving them vulnerable to other enemies. More than 1.000.000 people were killed due to direct or indirect consequences of the war.
1279 the last chola emperor Rajendra III was rooted and the chola empire ceased.
