Armed conflict between Tibetan rebels and the Chinese army (1956)
1956 - 2026
1956 Armed conflict between Tibetan rebels and the Chinese army (PLA) in Kham and Amdo, triggered by the implementation of socialist reforms, including land redistribution, which disrupted traditional Tibetan society. The Chinese attempted to disarm the Khampas, provoking violent backlash. This led to PLA reprisals, including bombing monasteries like Litang and conducting brutal "search-and-destroy" operations. These regions were outside the administrative control of Lhasa and were treated as regular Chinese provinces, leading to widespread resentment among local Khampas and Amdo nomads. The guerilla warfare spread all over Tibet but only in its lightest version.
