Clashes between local chieftains (1896-1910)
1896 - 20261896 - 1910 Clashes between local chieftains, sometimes supported by Chinese troops, occurred regularly in Eastern Tibet. The frequent turmoils in Kham had also its cause because the Khampas wanted to become more independent of the Tibetan central government. The tendency to arrange with the Chinese, was stronger in Lhasa where Chinese troops were deployed. At the same time the increasing weakness and instability of the Chinese emperor's state became noticeable.
