Introduction of the “Golden Urn/Vase” by pressure of the Qing emperor (1792-1793)
1792 - 20261792/93 Introduction of the “Golden Urn/Vase” by pressure of the Qing emperor: In the future, official rebirths of high (= politically important) lamas were not anymore to be chosen strictly according to Tibetan traditions. High-ranking lamas were to make a preselection of at least three boys, whose names were written down and put into an urn (a present from the Chinese emperor). Drawing lots decided who would be the official lama child. This procedure was performed e.g. with the nomination of the 10th, 11th and 12th Dalai Lamas as well as with the 8th and the 9th Panchen Lamas.
No term of the 9th Dalai Lama (1805 – 1815). The rumor exists that the 9th to 12th Dalai Lamas all died out of 'unnatural' causes.
No term of the 10th Dalai Lama (1816 – 1837)
