Rongtöpa or Rongtön Sheja Kunrig


Rongtöpa or Rongtön Sheja Kunrig (1367-1449) was one of the most important scholars of the Sakya school. He, like his principal teacher, Yaktön Sangye Pal, is especially renowned for mastering the Prajnaparamita and Abhisamayalankara. He was the founder of his own Monastery of Nalendrain in 1436.

Rongtönpa traveled a lot and earned the reputation of a great teacher particularly in regards to the sutras, although he also taught extensively on Vajrayana. He had many talented students. Among them was also the 6th Karmapa, Tongwa Dönden.

Although he put remarkable effort into teaching, Rongtönpa was also a great yogi.

He was famous for his knowledge of the Prajnaparamita, on which he composed a commentary, and was a great master of the transmission of Abhidharmakoshakarika.
