Gyamkhar Kalzang Chödrön

Gyamkhar Kalzang Chödrön was born ~ 1900. She was the mother of the 16th Karmapa.

It is said, that she was taken to Palpung Monastery as a child to receive a blessing from the
15th Karmapa. The 15th Karmapa already knew that she would be the mother of his next
reincarnation. He gave her a package of special teas, a silk scarf, a protector string and was
very affectionate with her.

There are many stories about her. She was quite special and it is said that she was a dakini.
As the second wife of the 16th Karmapa’s father, she gave birth to eight children, one of
whom was, as predicted, the 16th Karmapa. The other three boys became a Sakya lama, a
Nyingma lama and the father of the 14th Shamarpa.
