Drug Nyön Kunga Legpa
Drug Nyön Kunga Legpa, also known as Drugpa Künleg (“The Crazy Yogi of the
Drugpa”), was born in 1455. He was the nephew of Namkha Pelzang and belonged to the
family of the Drugpa Kagyü tradition. He is considered to have been a rebirth of the Indian mahasiddha Shawaripa, who was known, like Drugpa Künleg himself, to be a hunter with a dog as well as bow and arrow.
Drugpa Künleg traveled extensively and met many Buddhist masters, who became his teachers. He held many important transmissions, for example „The Six Cycles of One Taste“ from Rechungpa, practice instructions for Tummo and the complete teachings of Mahamudra.
When he later took his full ordination vows he received the name Kunga Lekpa Peljor Zangpo.
Drugpa Künleg studied with a variety of persons – from ordinary individuals to religious actors in a range of disciplines and undertook a number of pilgrimages. He spent a substantial portion of his life traveling back and forth to Bhutan, where he was a well-known Buddhist master.
He also later took at least one wife and had a son.
However it is written that he received the transmission 250 of the „Profound Inner Meaning“ composed by the 3rd Karmapa – from the 7th Karmapa Chödrak Gyatso (1454-1506).
