Dignaga

Dignaga (480-540 CE) was an Indian Buddhist philosopher who is seen as one of the fathers
of Buddhist logic (epistemology) in India in the tradition of Vasubandhu.

He had great influence on the work of later philosophers such as Dharmakirti.

Dignaga was born into a Brahmin family, became a monk of the Buddhist Vaibashika school and gained deep insight of Buddhist scripures. He later followed the Yogacara school. After having meditated in caves and composed many treatises (his main work was „The Compendium of the Valid
249 Insight“), he retreated to a cave in Orissa, south of Calcutta, where he passed away in the
solitude of the forest at the age of 60.
