Dhombi Heruka with consort on tiger

Dhombi Heruka with consort on tiger probably lived during the 8th-9th century.
According to legend, Dombi Heruka was a king of Magadha.

The mahasiddha Virupa secretly gave him the empowerment to enter the mandala of Hevajra and with his practice on Hevajra the king attained supernatural powers as well as a level of enlightenment and thus became one of the 84 Mahasiddhas.

He cared greatly for the people in his kingdom and wished that they rid themselves of fear and unhealthy desires. He built a large bronze bell hanging from a tree. Whenever he saw danger or poverty in the kingdom, he asked his subject to ring it. People did as he said and in time all problems including crime and poverty disappeared.

One day there came a group of musicians to the city, and one of the musicians had a beautiful daughter. Dombi Heruka wished her to become his tantric consort. They lived together and practiced secretly over 12 years, because the young lady belonged to a lower caste. When his subjects found out what had happened, they forced Dombi Heruka to abdicate his throne to his son.

From the moment he left his kingdom all the earlier problems came back.
That was why a delegation was sent out to call him back. They found him and his consort and they agreed to return to the kingdom.

They rode into the city in union on the back of a pregnant tigress while brandishing a poisonous snake as a whip. To this day, they are depicted in this way.
