8th Tatsak Jedrung, Yeshe Lobzang Tenpai Gönpo


The 8th Tatsak Jedrung, Yeshe Lobzang Tenpai Gönpo (1760-1810) belongs to a reincarnation line of the Gelugpas. Tenpay Gönpo was born in Kham and recognized in an age of five and enthroned and studied in the Monastery of Pasho.

In 1772 he got the title “lama of the seal“ from the Qianlong Emperor in Beijing. The emperor presented Tenpin Gönpo to the Panchen Lama in a dragon-robe. Later he studied with the 8th Dalai Lama, who ordained him in 1782.

In 1786 he was – due to his bonds to Beijing appointed as the Dalai Lama’s assistant. He had a lot of influence within the government in Tibet. In 1804, when the 8th Dalai Lama died, he became regent and was also responsible for the recognition of the 9th Dalai Lama.
