Gyalwa Gyamtso

Gyalwa Gyamtso (Tib., Skt. Jinasagara, lit. “Almighty Ocean”) is a red form of Loving Eyes, the buddha of compassion. It is a special meditational buddha aspect of the Karma Kagyü school and originated from the “Revealed Treasure” tradition of the Nyingma school.

This form of Loving Eyes is depicted either in a solitary appearance or embracing a consort. He is either standing or seated and correlates to the number of retinue figures that are depicted in the mandala.

Here is a brief description from Gampo Abbey’s three-year retreat prospectus:
Gyalwa Gyatso, red Avaloketishvara with consort, is a very important yidam practice in the Kagyü lineage, and like Guyhasamaja, it is of the father lineage. The lineage comes from Rechungpa who received it from two sources. First, he was asked by Marpa to go to India and receive these teachings on the nine Dharmas of the formless dakinis from Tiphupa.
Guru Rinpoche also gave instructions on Gyalwa Gyamtso to King Trisong Detsen and Yeshe Tsogyal. They were hidden as a terma that was later transmitted to Rechungpa by the tertön Nyan Rolpa. Rechungpa’s lineage was transmitted to the 2nd Karmapa, Karma Pakshi and the practice of Gyalwa Gyamtso remains a heart practice of the Karmapas (they are seen as an emanation of Gyalwa Gyamtso).
